DAY ONE Istanbul, 9-15-2008: Audio from Henri Barkey on Ottomans and Turkey's current politics and culture; photo gallery and video

Photo album: Views of Istanbul (for cutlines, click the text icon).

AUDIO:

Henri Barkey, Chair of the Department of International Relations at Lehigh University. An excellent, very energetic historical perspective (especially with the role of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey,) and account of the current political swirl that is Turkey’s present reality.

VIDEO:

These are scenes from Gatekeepers Editors’ first day in Istanbul (9-15-2008). The clips progress from the Istanbul Airport to the immediate vicinity of the Armada Hotel in the Sultanahmet neighborhood, a short walk to where the Sea of Marmara (one of the clips) enters the Bosphorus Strait. The last scene is from the roof of the hotel from which can be seen the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Very cool, Jake. I like the shot of the cats on the rocks.

I'd be even better with a bit of narration so it's more obvious what's catching your eyes on the video.
